Dyslexia assessments for children & young people  (aged 8 - 18 years)

If your child is finding aspects of reading, spelling or writing difficult, a dyslexia assessment can help you understand why. I provide friendly, thorough assessments that build a clear picture of their individual strengths and difficulties, whether dyslexia is present, and the support that may help at school and at home.

Assessments are available either in person or remotely.

In-person assessments
Assessments can take place in your home if you live within approximately a 40-minute drive of Frome, covering parts of Somerset, Bath, Bristol, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. I can also carry out assessments at my home in Frome.

Remote assessments
Remote assessments take place via Microsoft Teams, so your child can complete the assessment from home.

You will need:
- a laptop or desktop computer, or a large tablet
- a webcam and keyboard
- a stable internet connection
- a quiet space to work

A phone or small tablet isn't suitable for the assessment.

What does the assessment involve?
The assessment usually takes around three hours, with breaks as needed. We work through a range of tasks exploring:
- verbal and visual reasoning
- working memory
- phonological processing
- reading
- spelling
- writing

The assessment is designed to build a detailed picture of your child's learning profile, including both their strengths and areas where they may need additional support.

Before the assessment
You'll receive a booking pack and questionnaires to gather relevant background information from you and your child's school. This forms an important part of the assessment and helps me understand their experiences alongside the assessment findings.

On the day
For an in-person assessment, we'll need somewhere quiet to work at a table without too many distractions. Your child can have breaks whenever they need them and is welcome to have drinks, snacks, fidget toys or anything else that helps them feel comfortable and concentrate.

After the assessment
You'll receive a detailed written report approximately 15 working days after the assessment. This will explain the findings clearly, confirm whether your child meets the criteria for dyslexia where appropriate, highlight their individual strengths and areas of difficulty, and provide practical recommendations for school and home.
